Subject: Phall Tour
The scene: Beginning of the fall tour. We came down from Roch in the bus - me, Larry, Peter, and some others? At these shows I bought my first drum, and quickly was at any and every drum circle I could find from then on. In fact, High Times did an article on the Dead scene and included a picture of a drum circle from these shows that included me. The hallways in Landover were spacious and always fun. But they only had speakers at certain locations and the venue had these curtains that blocked the sound from coming out into the hallways, so the sound was bad if you weren't by the speakers. During the second set I kept opening the curtain, much to the annoyance of the security (I know, an immature act, but it was fun and people were cheering every time we opened the curtain). I actually wound up getting kicked out of the show during Black Muddy River (luckily). Imagine if I'd done that the next night???? And missed Ripple???? Man, that close call taught me to never do anything like that again!
The music: Bucket and TLEO are fine, but the slide solo in Minglewood is the first real spark on this evening. Great playing on the Let it Grow. Scarlet is unique with some really interesting play between Phil, Jerry, and Brent. But it is short. Nice peak to Fire. Healey does some funky sound effects during the jam of LLR. Interesting and very good Watchtower with Bobby using MIDI at times (still a new feature at this period in time). A fine soaring Stella that peaks with Jerry and Brent intertwining up in the stratosphere. Sugar Mags is pretty strong as well.
